Greek-American Heritage Month, Hudson Valley

Did you know March is Greek-American Heritage Month?
In honor of this cultural celebration, we are featuring some great Greek food specials.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau estimation, there are approximately 1,315,775 people of Greek ancestry in the United States. New York has the largest number of Greek Americans.
The Greek-American community maintains particularly close ties with its homeland, with some immigrants trying to replicate the closeness of their own villages in the U.S.

For generations of Greek-Americans, preserving their culture, religion, and language has been a cherished goal.

Pinot Noir is the primary red grape in France’s Burgundy region, and it makes some of the world’s most sought-after and age-worthy wines – particularly those from the limestone soils of the Côte d’Or. Each village there claims to produce wines with unique characteristics related to its particular terroir.
But great Pinot Noir wine is made in many locations. There are excellent examples from California’s Carneros and Russian River Valley regions, as well as Oregon’s Willamette Valley and New Zealand.
The best Pinot Noir boasts delicate, sometimes sour, cherry and strawberry flavors with some spice, presenting medium to low acidity and relatively light tannins. Oaked versions may also have smoke, vanilla and toast flavors, which develop with age. Winemakers rarely blend it, though Pinot Noir grapes are a key component in Champagne and other sparkling wines, where they add body and flavor, and color for rosé versions.
Pinot Noir, vulnerable to extreme cold, extreme heat, rot and vineyard pests, is relatively difficult to grow. The grapes’ thin skins demand exceptionally gentle handing to prevent damage to the final wine. The grape is so prone to mutation that it has even spawned entirely new varieties, including Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Meunier. As a result, farmers must select from dozens of Pinot clones when planting (the best known is the Pommard clone, named for the fabled Burgundy appellation). But farmers and winemakers endure these challenges because the final result, as you’ll see, is often very rewarding.

What is TAP New York?
Over the years, TAPSM New York has developed into one of New York State's largest craft beer festivals.
We're not talking about big-corporation beer that comes out of huge vats in a 300,000 sq. ft. production plant. We're talking about hand-made beer.... not beer that is rushed through the brewing process to get it on the shelf as quickly as possible, but beer with enough personality and genuine taste to be called "craft-brewed". This is beer made with pride by people who truly enjoy a quality, flavorful beer.
Many of the invited brewers produce their beer for sale only in their location.... whether it is a restaurant, a brewpub or a small brewery. Others are breweries large enough to distribute on a larger scale, but maintain an excellent quality through their commitment to craft-brewing their product. You won't find Anheuser-Busch, Coors, or Miller products here. What you will find are some truly remarkable beers that will tantalize your taste buds... beers that offer a variety of color and flavor that the big boys only dream of. You'll find everything from pale ales and pilsners, to weisbiers, porters, stouts, and scotch ales; from hearty Bohemian and Bavarian-style lagers to glorious Belgian-style ales and, dare we say, even more.
But TAPSM New York is more than just about the beer. It's about great food -- tasty morsels that carefully complement these rich brews. And plenty of it.
It's about education.... about beer, about home-brewing, about beer/food pairings.... it's about cooking demonstrations from some of the best chefs in the region (and beyond).... and it's about good friends coming together for a weekend of good beer, good food and good times.
TAPSM New York is also a competition. Beer experts and non-experts will judge in a competition for the "Best Beer" and "Best Brewery" in New York State. Two cups are awarded on Saturday, the Matthew Vassar Cup and the F. X. Matt Memorial Cup.

Where is TAPSM New York?
TAPSM New York is held in the base lodge at Hunter Mountain in the beautiful northern Catskill Mountains.
You must be 21 years of age or older to attend TAPSM New York. No infants or children will be permitted to enter the event. This includes infants in strollers or carried by a parent. For the benefit and safety of your child and all other attendees, please make arrangements to leave your children at home or with friends or relatives.

Difference between an abbey that make beer from regular monks as to a trappist abbey

Abbey beers ("Bières d'Abbaye" or "Abdijbier") are made by commercial breweries, who take advantage of the positive associations of the Trappist breweries by imitating the styles and names of Trappist beers, and either brew under license from an existing abbey, or brand their beers with the name of an abbey ruin or some other religious connection, such as a local saint.
Abbey beers mainly came into being following World War II when Trappist beers experienced a new popularity. The Abbey beers were developed to take advantage of the public's interest in the Trappist beers. This is why the single key component of an Abbey beer is its name: there is always the name of a monastery (either real or fictious). Like the Trappist beers, Abbey beers do not connote a beer style, but rather a general type of beer.

Trappist beer
A Trappist beer is a beer brewed by or under control of Trappist monks. Of the world's 171 Trappist monasteries (as of April 2005), seven produce beer (six in Belgium and one in the Netherlands). Only these seven breweries are authorized to label their beers with the Authentic Trappist Product logo.

History
The Trappists, like many other religious people, originally brewed beer as to feed the community, in a perspective of self-sufficiency. Among the monastic breweries, the Trappists were certainly the most active brewers: in the last 300 years, there were at least nine Trappist breweries in France, six in Belgium, two in the Netherlands, one in Germany, one in Austria, one in Bosnia and possibly other countries.

International Trappist Association
For the beers, these criteria are the following:

  • The beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey, by or under control of Trappist monks.
  • The brewery, the choices of brewing, and the commercial orientations must obviously depend on the monastic community.
  • The economic purpose of the brewery must be directed toward assistance and not toward financial profit.
  • This association has a legal standing, and its logo gives to the consumer some information and guarantees about the produce.
There are currently seven breweries that are allowed to have their products display the Authentic Trappist Product logo.
